China runs on its own digital rails. A small eSIM and a clear plan for the services you rely on will keep you reachable, mapped and calm.
What is blocked, what works, and what to plan for.
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X and most Western news sites are blocked in mainland China without a VPN. The Great Firewall is real, but the daily experience of being online is easier than you might expect — if you arrive prepared.
Apple Maps, Maps.me, Booking.com, Trip.com, DiDi (in English) and most hotel Wi-Fi all work without a VPN. With a modest eSIM and an installed VPN, you can reach almost anything you use at home.
A short comparison to pick the right data plan.
A reliable default for most guests. 3–5 GB covers two weeks of maps, messaging and DiDi. Activates on arrival via QR code; no China-specific routing.
A China-specific eSIM with unlimited data on local carriers. Best for heavy users, but pricier and limited to mainland coverage.
Buy through Trip.com before you fly. Cheapest per GB and routes through the local carrier, but the activation flow is more involved.
Astrill, ExpressVPN and LetsVPN are the most reliable. Install and test at home — the China app store is unreliable for first-time setup.
Five minutes, one less worry.
Before you board, install the VPN, the eSIM app (Airalo / Holafly), and the apps you will need in China: DiDi (English for ride-hailing), Trip.com (trains, flights, hotels), Pleco (offline dictionary), and a translation app with offline Chinese.
On landing, switch on the eSIM, connect to hotel Wi-Fi as backup, and complete a short test message to a friend or family member. From that moment, you are reachable — the rest of the trip can unfold at its own pace.
We will send a tested eSIM + VPN bundle with your confirmation pack — one less thing on arrival.
