From international five-star to family-run boutique, Chinese hotels combine a tradition of considered service with the kind of value that surprises most first-time visitors.
Hotels in China have a generous spirit.
The five-star international chains (Shangri-La, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Aman, Banyan Tree) operate at the standard you would expect anywhere in the world. The four-star domestic chains (Jin Jiang, Hanting, Atour) often offer thoughtful design, real breakfasts, and pricing that is hard to match in Europe or North America.
Boutique hotels in cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou and Lijiang are a category of their own: small, characterful, often in restored courtyard homes or repurposed industrial buildings. These are the ones our team books most often.
A few practical notes.
Trip.com, Booking.com and Agoda all work in China. Direct booking (via the hotel website) often includes breakfast, late check-out, and a small upgrade. For retreats, we book direct.
The five-star system in China is broadly equivalent to international standards. A domestic five-star is a safe, well-appointed choice; an international five-star is a destination in itself.
Passport is required for check-in at all hotels (a national security requirement). The hotel will scan or copy it. Front-desk English is reliable in international and upper-mid-range hotels.
“Standard” rooms in China are often larger than the equivalent abroad. Suite upgrades are affordable. Ask for a high floor, a garden view, or a quiet side of the building — most hotels will accommodate.
What sets Chinese hotels apart.
Chinese hotel service culture is unusually warm. Housekeeping is thorough and unobtrusive; front-desk staff will frequently offer a welcome fruit plate or tea. Concierge desks in international hotels will arrange almost anything — from theatre tickets to a quiet dinner.
For longer stays, serviced apartments (in cities like Shanghai and Shenzhen) offer a homelike alternative with a kitchen, laundry, and the kind of privacy that makes a month feel easy. Our team books these for guests extending their retreat.
Tell us your preferences — high floor, garden view, quiet side — and we will book accordingly.
