Everything you need to know before your journey to China — from visas and transport to food, payments and cultural etiquette.
A smooth retreat begins long before you board the plane.
Travel to China is easier than ever — and a little preparation goes a long way. From understanding visa rules to navigating payments, food and cultural etiquette, the more you prepare in advance, the more deeply you can settle into your retreat experience.
This page walks you through every practical step in order. For the wellness practices themselves — Qigong, meditation, TCM — see our Eastern Retreat page.
China's visa policy is more accessible than ever for international visitors.
Citizens of many countries — including most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and parts of South America — can enter China visa-free for stays of up to 30 days. Always check the latest policy for your passport before booking.
Travellers transiting through China to a third country can often enjoy 144-hour or 240-hour visa-free transit in designated regions — perfect for combining a city stopover with your retreat.
Apply at your nearest Chinese consulate or via a visa service. Standard tourist visas (L visa) are typically valid for 30 days. We recommend applying at least 4–6 weeks before departure.
One of the most efficient and modern transport networks in the world.
Fast, frequent and affordable. Major carriers include Air China, China Eastern and China Southern. Booking 2–3 weeks ahead usually secures good fares.
World-class, punctual and scenic. Routes connect every major city, and second-class seats are comfortable for journeys under four hours.
Every major city has an English-friendly metro system. We provide a prepaid transport card on arrival for your independent exploring.
All airport pickups, hotel transfers and retreat-day travel are pre-arranged by your Fellow. You will never need to navigate transport alone.
In China, food is the first medicine — 食疗, food as therapy.
From the bold spice of Sichuan to the delicate dim sum of Guangdong, China's eight regional cuisines reflect its geography, climate and philosophy. Your Fellow will guide you to the most authentic and wellness-aligned options in each region.
Each meal is balanced for your constitution, the season and your wellness goals — warming broths, fresh greens, medicinal herbs and gentle cooking methods rather than heavy frying.
Vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free and allergy-specific diets are widely accommodated with advance notice. Please share your preferences with your Fellow at least two weeks before arrival.
Practical details that make China feel effortless once you land.
China runs on WeChat Pay and Alipay. Your Fellow will help set up a payment solution on arrival. International cards still work in hotels and larger restaurants, but daily life goes mobile.
A VPN is essential for Google, Instagram, WhatsApp and most Western apps. We send a setup guide before you fly, plus a local SIM or eSIM with data on arrival.
Bring layers, comfortable walking shoes, modest attire for temples and any personal wellness items. A detailed packing list is shared after booking; laundry service is available at all retreat hotels.
No special vaccinations are required for most travellers. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential. We brief you on local clinics, pharmacies and emergency contacts.
A few Mandarin phrases go a long way. Your Fellow provides a phrase card on arrival, along with a cultural etiquette guide covering tea, dining, temples and gifting.
Arrive curious, open and unhurried. The rhythm here is different — slower meals, longer conversations, deeper silences. Let your Fellow guide you into it.

Your Fellow will walk you through every step one-on-one, from visa forms to packing lists.
